Lake of the Woods & Rainy River conditions

Melanie Nelson • May 29, 2022

Our season on the LOW has officially begun!

As most of you know the winter was long and produced a lot of snow, which has caused flooding in and around the entire lake and the Rainy River. The River is up several feet, which has caused a significant increase in its current and a lot of downed trees floating down the river. It calls for all of us to be extra cautious as we head to the lake for some fishing this season. There has already been reports of damaged props and lower units. We are hearty, committed fishermen and outdoors women here in Northern Minnesota, it takes a lot to stop us from going out to catch our favorite fish!

Here are some tips from Captain Doug on staying safe and avoiding unnecessary accidents

  • GO SLOW - the amount of debris in the river is creating treacherous conditions. Going slow allows you to adjust your course if you see a log you need to avoid, or at the very least, not hit something so hard, if you can't avoid it.

  • KEEP YOUR DISTANCE - Do NOT follow right behind boats as you head down the river into the lake. The wake causes downed trees and logs to go under the water where you can't see them.

  • ASSIGN 1 or 2 "SPOTTERS" - Most are out as a group, assign 1 or 2 in your party to be an extra set of eyes. Call out to the captain when you see something in your path

  • SOBER IS SAFE - No matter the conditions, it is best when the captain and one spotter stay sober. Boating responsibly saves lives.

The weather is perfect for Boat Rentals here in SW Florida

which means the wind can have a substantial impact on the conditions of the lake. A little wind, 9 or under makes for a nice "wallleye chop", but when it kicks up into double digits is when you need to pay attention. Depending on where you get on the lake will also play a role on whether you will have favorable conditions or not. Whether your ride out or in will be pleasant or not. Whether you and your boat should be out or not. So here is the 411 if you launch out of the Rainy River and travel through the 4 mile bay, out the gap, into the lake. (South east side) NW winds are NOT your friend. A good strong one can often be referred to as an "Alberta Clipper". Double digit winds from this directions make for a really rough conditions. Why - because the wind is rolling across the entire lake before it hits us, the roughest conditions will be on the SE side. W and SW wind you can get some reprieve/shelter off of Long Point in our basin here, but once you pass the tip of long point it is sure to get rough. S and SE winds are favorable to us here, especially for a ride up to the northern side of the lake to Garden Island, Little and Big Oak Island. During the summer East winds are more rare. Safety is important to having a great experience on Lake of The Woods. Thanks for coming up!

Leon and Janelle booked a half day charter with Captain Doug and they were out early this AM. "It was the highlight of our trip up here", Leon exclaimed after they got off the water! The goal was to hear Janelle grunt as she brought in a big fish and oh boy, did they hit that goal. Janelle brought in a 36" Northern, what a fun battle that was! Captain Doug nicknamed Leon, Mr. Slot, he had the hot stick and was on fire!! With a fast boat and mobility, fishing time is UP, travel time is down and memories were made. Enjoy your fresh fish! Thanks for coming up!

Marinate your fresh walleye filets in Franks Red Hot Sauce for approx 2 hours. No need for milk and eggs... drain the excess sauce and simply bread with your favorite homemade breading or "shore lunch" Fry up and enjoy with your favorite sides. It's not too spicy, but adds a delicious flavor to the best Walleye on the planet - LOW Walleye. You can Thank Kelly for this recipe, feel free to make fun of his poncho, I did! Thanks for coming up.

5 of our regulars are up to LOW and at it again with Captain Doug. They have their own prize pot each day for Most fish and Biggest Fish. Laughter, adventures and making memories is what these trips are all about! Early this am was cloudy and rainy, but it cleared up pretty quick with the sun. Currently the weather is sunny, warm with no wind. Lake is flat. Fishing is good, limited out by 2:30 pm with good sized eaters. Some slots being caught making for a fun day Thanks for coming up!
